Abstract/Contents:Discusses standards for skin infields to maintain field safety that American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) proposed. Explaines the reasons why the ASTM has developed standards and "in 1969, althetic products and systems came under ASTM's umbrella." Lists four recommended readings by the Sports Equipment and Facilities Committee: F1632-99 Standard Test Method for Particle Size Analysis and Sand Shape Grading on Golf Course Putting Green and Sports Field Root Zone Mixes; F1647-99 Standard Test Methods for Organic Matter Content of Putting Green and Sports Turf Root Zone Mixes; 1702-96 Standard Test Method for Measuring Shock-Attenuation Characteristics of Natural Playing Surface Systems Using Light-weight Portable Apparatus; and F1815-97 Standard Test Method for Saturated Hydraulic Conductivity, Water Retention, Porosity, Particle Density, and Bulk Density of Putting Green and Sports Turf Root Zones. Provides subjects including standards for skin infields and cool-season athletic turf, and expects standards for warm-season turf and the composition of baseball field warming tracks. Briefly discusses the recent review, the "Standard Guide for Construction and Maintenance of Skinned Areas on Sports Fields." Describes how the guide for cool-season turf fields helps the sports turf industry, such as "these offer information for providing better quality and safer fields, which reduces the likelihood of serious injuries and the possibility of resulting legal actions."
