Abstract/Contents:Discusses integrated plant management as a solution to the expensive damage insects have on ornamental plants. Presents several insect-control techniques such as "pest-quarantine efforts, the use of pest-resistant plants, cultural and physical controls and chemical or biological controls." States that the resistance of ornamental plants is attributed to non-preference resistance and antibiosis. Includes recent research findings about new pest-resistant or tolerant plants. Provides results from studies of 17 azalea species, 137 holly species, 37 Buddleia species, and ornatmental crapapple tolerance. Presents two advantages to pest-resistant plants are using the varieties where specific pests are present and difficult to manage and using indicator plants that are highly susceptible to specific pests. Suggests monitoring "indicator plants on a regular basis when conditions are favorable for development of the pest." States that "to put plant resistance to work for you, select and use plant materials that are resistant to, or more tolerant of, specific pest problems in your area." Recommends talking to the local extension office and plant suppliers. Highlights new pest-resistant plants.
