Abstract/Contents:Discusses emerging diseases affecting turfgrass including gray leaf spot, localized dry spot, and ophiosphaerella dead spot. States, first that gray leaf spot (GLS) on perennial ryegrass is one of the newest diseases in cool season region. Researchers see this infect untreated immediate roughs and spread directly into treated tyegrass fairways by wind. Describes stages of GLS that you see a smoky appearance, gray masses of spores on the leaf surface, twisted straw-colored grass tips in early stages, and yellowing, water-soaked leaf blades, and black spores in later stages. Advises applying fungicides may be the most effective control. States, next that localized dry spot is related non-pathogenic factors such as algal crusting, poor soil structure, shallow root zones and inhibit efficient use of water. Basidiomycete fungi are associated with localized dry spot but also create hydrophobic conditions in the soil. Addresses using the cultural methods combined with fungicides as the best control. Finally, ophiosphaerella dead spot, ball-mark disease. Describes this disease which appears as small spots, and eventually reach 8 cm in diameter. You will find reddish-brown spots around the periphery and pinkish mycelia on newly infection.
