Abstract/Contents:"Our study was designed to test the influence of different bentgrass cultivars on the performance of Enterobacter cloacae and Pseudomonas fluorescens for the biological control of Pythium aphanidermatum-incited damping-off. Nearly 40 bentgrass cultivars were evaluated using different zoospore concentrations as inoculum. On some cultivars, biocontrol efficacy by bacterial inoculants exceeded that observed on other cultivars whereas no biocontrol activity was supported on some cultivars. Of the cultivars tested, E. cloacae was effective in suppressing damping-off on all cultivars except Cobra, LCB-103, 18th Green, Cato, SR1020, and Penncross. P. fluorescens, on the other hand, produced compounds that were phytotoxic to seedlings of many of the bentgrass cultivars and was effective in suppressing damping-off only on L-93, LCB-703, Lopez, Exeter, Crenshaw, Cobra, LCB-103, 18th Green, and Cato. Our results indicate that the efficacy of inoculants for biological disease control may be influenced by the plant cultivar on which they are applied."
