Abstract/Contents:"We have examined species composition of Fusarium communities on natural populations of prairie grasses. Although there has been considerable study of Fusarium species diversity and mycotoxin production from major grain crops, this study may be the first population-level study to directly examine non-agricultural communities of Fusarium and to determine whether they differ for these characteristics. We assessed species compositon and intra- and interspecific molecular genetic divergence and variation in phenotypic characters, such as female fertility and mycotoxin production, among Fusarium section Liseola isolated from grasses in a native tallgrass prairie remnant. In general, the range of species we recovered from these grasses was similar to that typically recovered from maize or sorghum monocultures. We recovered isolates from five of the eight described biological species within the Gibberella fujikuroi species complex (Fusarium section Liseola) from these native prairie grasses. We also isolated and characterized a ninth, previously undescribed biological species with a F. anthophilum--like anamorph. Mycotoxin production among prairie isolates did not differ qualitatively from isolates of those species recovered from agricultural settings."
