Abstract/Contents:"Eleven fungal isolates from weedy grasses collected in Florida were screened to select potential biocontrol agents for cogongrass. Two isolates that caused the highest levels of leaf lesions and leaf blight (30-50% disease severity (DS) based on James' key for southern corn leaf blight), Bipolaris sacchari and Drechslera gigantea, isolated from cogongrass and crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis), were chosen for further evaluation. Conidia of B. sacchari and D. gigantea were mass-produced on autoclaved rye grains. On average, 10 mg and 11.2 mg conidia per g of grains were produced by the two fungi. Conidia were viable for 10 mo when stored dry at 10°C and 30% relative humidity. Conidia applied in an oil emulsion (Sunspray 6E oil [4%] + mineral oil [10%]) caused higher DS than when applied in 1% gelatin. In field trials with different inoculum concentrations [105 vs 106 conidia/ml], oil emulsion concentrations [18% vs 26%], and application volumes [100 ml/0.25 m2 vs 200ml/0.25 m2], the interaction of the application volume and inoculum concentration influenced the level of control. Complete coverage of the foliage with the conidia-oil emulsion was key to achieving high levels of cogongrass control in the field."
