Abstract/Contents:Timothy, meadow fescue and perennial ryegrass were grown on artificial soil profiles 20 cm deep of sandy loam, silt loam, loam and clay with or without compaction to give 15 and 25% pore space on the sandy loam and 5-7 and 15-19% pore space on the other 3 soils. In winter the plots had natural snow cover, ice cover, or were kept free from snow and ice. On snow-covered plots the soil temperature remained close to 0 deg C, whereas on the other plots it depended on, but was much higher than, the air temperature during the coldest periods. Grasses were undamaged where there was snow cover; ice cover killed the ryegrass and severely injured the other 2 species, while on bare plots a few plants of ryegrass survived and there was only temporary damage to the other grasses. Damage on ice-covered plots was worst on silt loam and least on clay, while on bare plots it was worst on sandy loam, next worst on clay and least on silt loam. Effects of compaction were large on ice-covered silt loam, where compaction reduced winter survival of timothy by 55%.e
