Abstract/Contents:Discusses how to lay out a golf course, stating that "the ideal character of ground for a golf-course layout would be an area of varied topography, not too steep in character, on sandly loam with a gravelly subsoil to insure rapid draining off after rain, wooded in part, perhaps, but with the center more or less open." Also discusses the location and length of fairways; the placement of bunkers and traps, water hazards, golf greens, and trees. States that "golf-course design offers unusual opportunity for the display of ingenuity on the part of the designer. The best courses, it seems needless to say, are those where conditions are taken as they are found, and the course developed therefrom in a way that will give marked individuality to the course as a whole and variety in the play."
