| Abstract/Contents: | "Observations were made on the influence of nitrogen, phosphate, iron, lime, compost and spiking on the structure of earthworm populations in 128 plots each 7 sq. yards in area which had been under continuous treatment for twenty-two years. Over 16,000 earthworms were examined and found to belong to ten species, five of which gave 94.5% of the total. The commonest species was Allolobophora tuberculata. The effects of treatments, alone and in combination, on the population and proportion of the species was studied. Sulphate of ammonia and sulphate of iron alone but more especially in combination have a marked inhibitory effect but this is offset to some extent by other treatments, for instance spiking. Lime in combination favours earthworms. Soil reaction has a marked influence and it was found that earthworms were scarce at pH 5·0 increasing to an optimum at pH 6·5 to 7·0 and falling above pH 7·5." |
