Abstract/Contents:States that seed of Westerwolds ryegrass, cocksfoot, meadow fescue, timothy, Phalaris arundinacea, Poa pratensis and lucerne was sown 1.5 centimeters deep in dry mineral or peat soil and (a) not watered until 2-40 days after sowing, or (b) watered on the 10th day and left unwatered for the next 2-40 days. Reports that emergence of all spp. fell with increasing length of time in dry soil and Westerwolds ryegrass showed the smallest response in both soils. Also reports that lucerne and timothy germinated quickly when water was applied and suffered more than other spp. from subsequent water stress.
