Abstract/Contents:"The World Wide Web has been considered a powerful medium for delivering course materials and many course-authoring tools have made it easy to offer an entire course through the Web. One such tool, Web Course Tools (WebCT), has been adopted by faculties across the United States and Canada to develop courses, including turfgrass courses. Many turfgrass course instructors have indicated that they would try WebCT in their teaching but only a few have actually used it. At the University of Rhode Island (URI), we have not offered a Web-based turfgrass management course. However, Web-based courses are now desired for a Golf and Sports Turfgrass Management Program jointly sponsored by URI and the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI). The project described in this paper was to develop an introductory turfgrass management course to be taught by the turfgrass faculty at URI, mainly through the Web, with laboratory exercises delivered in a traditional manner. The course consists of 12 instructional modules covering common topics of an introductory turfgrass management course. Each module contains multiple instructional units and each unit has a text to present a particular topic, navigation buttons for moving between units, and links to graphics, slide shows, multimedia, or quizzes to help students understand the topic. WebCT quiz management facility made the online testing of student performance easy and review of results instant. E-mail, chat, bulletin board, and whiteboard provided means for both asynchronous and synchronous, text-based interaction. This paper discusses the approach that we took in designing the course using WebCT and shares the experience with turfgrass course instructors having used or willing to try WebCT or similar course-authoring tools."
