Abstract/Contents: | "As the popularity of distance education continues to grow, instructors are faced with a variety of delivery technologies to choose from. This paper describes two distance education programs that utilize three delivery technologies. Two turfgrass management distance education programs have been developed at the University of Georgia. One is strictly 'print' or traditional correspondence based, while the other utilizes videotape in conjunction with World Wide Web (www) or print formats. The student selects which method of delivery best satisfies his/her learning needs. Videotapes are used to demonstrate various field and laboratory practices such as spreader/ sprayer calibration, turfgrass and seed identification, and even a golf course tour. The print based program has enrolled more than 2,500 students from all 50 states as well as 21 countries. Program evaluation by students and academicians has been extremely good. Likewise, the use of videotapes in conjunction with the Web or print formats has been well received. Evaluations for one course in the program which relies heavily on the use of videotapes, have been comparable to the same course taught on campus. The effectiveness of a distance education program or course is not determined by any single method of delivery, but more importantly how a specific delivery method is used to best satisfy the needs of the student." |
