Abstract/Contents:"Hydrophobicity was tested with the water drop penetration test on 3323 soil samples collected from agricultural fields and gardens throughout New York State that had been submitted for nutrient analyses. Approximately 1% of the agricultural and 13% of the garden soil samples were water repellent. Extremely water repellent soils had a low pH and intermediate organic matter content. The effect of adding organic matter on water repellency of a sand was examined. The results did not match the trends observed in the characterization study, indicating that hydrophobicity is a result of a complex set of reactions in the soil."
