Abstract/Contents:"Species of Rhizoctonia induce important diseases of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) in the southeastern United States. There is little information on the frequencies of infection levels of tall fescue by anastomosis groups (AG) of R. solani Kuhn or other Rhizoctonia species. In this study, leaf and crown tissues from two tall fescue cultivars, Titan 2 and Rebel 3, established at Clemson and Florence, SC were systematically sampled to determine the frequency of isolation of Rhizoctonia species and sub-specific groups of R. solani. Rhizoctonia solani AG 1-IA, R. solani AG 2-2 IIIB, R. zeae Voorhees, R. oryzae Ryker and Gooch, and binucleate Rhizoctonia species were isolated from May 1996 through March 1997, accounting for 17, 13.3, 26.5, 6.1, and 37.1%, respectively, of 377 total isolates identified. Only three isolates of R. solani AG 4 were identified. The frequency of detection of Rhizoctonia species or sub-groups of R. solani did not differ, by chi-square analysis, between Titan 2 and Rebel 3. Rhizoctonia solani AG 1-IA was isolated more frequently from leaf tissue (48 of 64 isolates) and R. solani AG 2-2 IIIB (45 of 50 isolates), R. zeae (74 of 100 isolates) and binucleate Rhizoctonia species (123 of 140 isolates) were isolated more frequently from crown tissue. Isolations from the Florence location yielded a higher frequency of R. solani AG 1-IA than at Clemson, but frequencies of R. solani AG 2-2 IIIB and R. zeae were greater from the Clemson location than from Florence. Isolates of R. solani AG 1-IA, AG 2-2 IIIB and R. zeae were pathogenic to tall fescue in growth chamber tests. Results of this study indicate that levels of infestation by different causal agents of brown patch may vary by geographic location or plant part cultured. Determination of the identification and frequency of the occurrence of particular pathogens may be important in field evaluations when screening for potential resistance or tolerance to these pathogens."
