Abstract/Contents: | "The objective of this research was to develop more specific recommendations for managing red thread disease in perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) with fertilizer applications. A field study was conducted over three years in two locations (NJ, PA) to compare the effects of source, rate, and timing of N, P, and K applications on red thread development in perennial ryegrass. An inverse correlation was detected between red thread severity and N assimilation, as indicated by turf color. Nitrogen applications were most effective in reducing red thread severity when made close to the time of disease development. Nitrogen rates of 97.7 and 195.4 ha-1 yr-1 significantly restricted red thread development; however the 48.8 kg ha-1 yr-1 rate did not in many cases. Water soluble N was more effective in reducing red thread severity than materials containing slow-release N. Phosphorous and K applications did not consistently reduce red thread severity at either experimental location." |
