Abstract/Contents:"Many homeowners and turfgrass managers in the southern United States desire a cool season perennial turfgrass that would remain green year-around. This study was undertaken to determine if the heat resistance of Texas bluegrass (Poa archnifera Torr.) could be combined with the turfgrass quality and apomicitc method of reproduction in Kentucky bluegrass (P. pratensis L.). Texas bluegrass is a highly rhizomatous, dioecious, perennial cool-season grass endemic to southern Kansas, western Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. It is native to all areas of Texas except for the extreme southern and western part but is most common in the north central region. Kentucky bluegrass is a rhizomatous, perennial cool-season grass introduced from Europe and is facultative apomict. Kentucky bluegrass is cultivated for lawns and pastures in the humid northern parts of the United States, but lacks heat and drought tolerance needed for the environmental conditions of the southern United States. Hybrids were made using the Texas bluegrass as the maternal parent and Kentucky bluegrass serving as the pollen source. Inflorescences were detached from the plants, placed in nutrient solution and bagged together. Early in the hybridization program, hybrids were evaluated for agronomic traits as the first selection critera, but later the initial selections were based on seed production and then agronomic value was determined on those selections with adequate seed production. One hybrid bluegrass, 'Reveille', has been developed and released for use by the turfgrass industry."
