Abstract/Contents:"Movement of the tawny mole cricket, Scapteriscus vicinus, was studied using pitfall arenas and linear pitfall traps in bahiagrass pastures. Ground cover had no effect on movement out of the pitfall areas. Increasing population density had little effect on pitfall captures up to ca. 10 S. vicinus nymphs/m2 (but populations below 2-3/m2 were virtually undetectable by pitfall traps). The difference in numbers captured between population densities of 11/m2 and 15/m2 was more than 20-fold (5.2 vs 152 per 24 hours). Soil moisture in the range of 10-20% had no effect on mole cricket movement in the field. Increased activity following rainfall was noted if the soil had been dry (< ca. 12% soil moisture) but not if the soil was already moist. Larger nymphs moved more on the surface and were more readily caught in pitfall traps than smaller nymphs."
