Abstract/Contents:"Preemergence herbicides for summer annual weed control and nematicides in bermudagrass (Cynodon L.) fairway turf were studied to determine their influence on bermudagrass quality and rooting in soil infested with plant parasitic nematodes. Herbicides (pendimethalin, 3.364 kg ai ha-1, oxadiazon, 4.485 kg ai ha-1, prodiamine,1.12 kg a.i. ha-1, or dithiopyr, 0.561 kg a.i. ha-1) were applied in early spring prior to weed seed germination. Nematicides (fenamiphos at 11.214 kg a.i. ha-1 or ethoprop at 22.4 kg a.i. ha-1) were applied in April during turf green-up. Nematodes detected by soil assay included sting (Belonolaimus Steiner), ring (Criconema Hoffmanner and Menzel), spiral (Helicotylenchus Steiner), stubby root (Paratrichodorus Cobb), and root knot (Meloidogyne Goeldi). Herbicide or nematicide applications affected turf quality in trials conducted in 6 of 8 locations over 3 years. Herbicide x nematicide interactions were observed in only 3 sites. Oxadiazon resulted in the most consistent improvement of turf quality of the herbicides examined in this study, but oxadiazon did not improve rooting. Nematicides increased turf quality but improvement did not always result from increased rooting or nematode control. In fact, increased turf quality with nematicide application occurred in the absence of detectable nematode suppression or improved rooting. Suppression of total nematodes rather than consistent suppression of only sting nematodes was associated with fenamiphos more consistently than with ethoprop."
