Abstract/Contents:"The objective of this study was to determine the effect of trinexapac-ethyl (Primo 1EC) on root development in transplanted Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) sod. Trinexapac-ethyl was applied at 0.239 ml m-2 two weeks before sod harvest, two weeks after transplant, and two weeks before harvest plus two weeks after transplant. Root development was assessed by measuring the force required to break the roots of the sod from the underlying soil using a hydraulic lifting device. Two weeks after transplant, the tensile strength of sod treated with trinexapac-ethyl two weeks before harvest and sod treated two weeks before harvest plus two weeks after transplant was increased by 22% and 18%, respectively, compared with untreated sod in 1996. For sod lifted eight weeks after transplant, treatment with trinexapac-ethyl two weeks before harvest resulted in increases in root tensile strength of 34% in 1997 and 23% in 1998 compared with untreated sod."
