Abstract/Contents:Discusses preventative control of white grubs (Oriental beetle, Japanese beetle, masked chafers, European chafer, Asiatic garden beetle, and Green June beetle) with Merit, a neonicotinoid, and Mach2 [Mach 2], an insect growth regulator. States that "the obvious disadvantage of preventative applications is that they have to be done before white grub populations can be estimated through soil sampling. Because white grub infestations tend to be localized and sporadic, preventative applications are applied over larger areas than required for grub control. This increases the cost of grub management and may in the long-term dramatically reduce populations of natural enemies by depriving them of prey or hosts. Smart turfgrass managers will restrict preventative applications to high-risk areas, i.e., areas with extremely low damage threshold and tolerance, areas with a history of white grub infestations, and areas with high beetle activity (egg-laying) in June-July."
