Abstract/Contents:"Research was undertaken to investigate the use of wetting agents as a means of controlling dew formation on three cool season sports turf surfaces used for night games of cricket and rugby football. A total of five wetting agents were evaluated with an ethoxylated nonyl phenol class product being used as the industry standard against which other wetting agents were compared. After wetting agents were applied, a pre-weighed absorbent pad was used to measure the amount of dew formed. The trial was carried out using three runs completed on three separate occasions throughout the year during winter and spring. Results showed that the most effective wetting agents were those that prevented the amount of dew forming from exceeding a set maximum target of 50 1 ha-1. The only wetting agents successfully preventing dew formation from exceeding this level were two organo-silicon products. Application rates depended on how long control of dew formation was required. The results of this work indicate that there are now better wetting agents agents available for the prevention of dew formation than the ethoxylated nonyl phenol class of product currently recommended in New Zealand. However, local trialing on a small scale is still recommended for individual turf managers before applying new products over a premier surface."
