Abstract/Contents:"Seasonal and annual clipping mass and nitrogen content were determined for a turf stand mixture of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). Recycling (mulching) and non-recycling (bagging) mowers were compared for their effects on weed invasion, turf quality and thatch accumulation. Plots were mowed weekly at 51mm with a recycling or non-recycling mower. Large quantities of clippings (14,594 kg ha-1 y-1) and nitrogen (156 kg ha-1 y-1) were removed with the non-recycling (bagging) mower. Mowing with a recycling mower enhanced turf quality and color; however, texture and density were not affected by mower type. The recycling mower also increased thatch development by 4mm over 2 years."
