Abstract/Contents:"Three cultivars and their simple blends (50:50) in perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.), tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb), Chewings fescue (Festuca rubra var. commutata Gauld.), creeping red fescue (Festuca rubra var. rubra L.) and Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) were evaluated for turf quality, color, and clipping weights in this 3-year field irrigated study under conditions in Bursa, Turkey. Effects of the cultivar blending on the turf characteristics varied greatly according to the species, and cultivars mixed. In general, the blending of the cultivars having similar morphological traits and turf characteristics was not worthwhile. Very little or no gains were obtained from blending tall fescue cultivars with similar turf characteristics. In contrast, there was some justification for cultivar blends in the other species used in this study. The turf performances of the blends were mostly average of the cultivars which had been blended. In general, blends of two cultivars usually gave better turfgrass performance than the inferior cultivar, however, a blend of two cultivars usually gave a lower turfgrass performance than the superior cultivar of the blend."
