| Abstract/Contents: | The spatial distribution of each stage in the life-history of Blissus leucopterus hirtus Mont. was examined in a field of turf grass in New Jersey in 1974 using the relationship between the mean and mean crowding. An increasing degree of aggregation during the life-cycle was found to be influenced by an interaction between an agglomeration towards the most favourable sites of the habitat and the operation of inversely density-dependent mortality. The observed distribution patterns were fitted by several contagious discrete statistical models. The frequency of fit was greatest for the negative-binomial series. Failure to satisfy underlying assumptions with the application of parametric statistical methods used to compare means was examined. None of various transformations was successful in stabilising the variance. However, the logarithmic and the inverse hyperbolic sine transformation were both successful in bringing normality and independence to the residuals. |
