Abstract/Contents:"Smooth crabgrass (Digitaria ischaemum [Schreber] Schreber ex Muhlenb.) is an invasive weed of cool-season turfgrasses. Decades of research have shown that smooth crabgrass can be effectively controlled with herbicides, but efficacy among products can vary from year to year and among regions. Turfgrass professionals would like to utilize lower rates and fewer herbicide applications and more natural products. This investigation evaluated commonly used pre- and postemergence herbicides and corn gluten meal for their smooth crabgrass control performance as rates were reduced over a three year field study. Standard use rates of benefin (N-butyl-N-ethyl-a,a,a,-trifluro-2,6-dinitro-p- toluidine) + trifluralin (a,a,a-trifluro-2,6-dinitro-N,N-dipropyl-p- toluidine) 2G; pendimethalin (N-[1-ethylpropyl]-3,4-dimethyl-2,6-dinitrobezenamine) 60DG; prodiamine (2,4-dinitro-N3,N3-dipropyl-6-[trifluoro- methyl]-1,3-benzenediamine) 65DG; dithiopyr (S,S-dimethyl 2-[difluoromethyl]-4-[2-methypropyl]-6-[trifluormethyl]-3,5- pyridine-dicarbothioate) 1EC; and DCPA (dimethyl tetrachloroterephthalate) 75WP provided commercially acceptable (i.e., ≤ 5% crabgrass cover) control in the first year. In the second year, reduced rates of benefin + trifluralin and pendimethalin (1.12 + 1.12 or 2.24 kg ha-1); prodiamine (0.28 + 0.28 or 0.56 kg ha-1); dithiopyr (0.21 + 0.21 or 0.43 kg ha-1); and DCPA (11.76 + 5.88 or 11.76 kg ha-1) continued to provide commercially acceptable control. By the third year, only benefin + trifluralin (1.68 kg ha-1) and prodiamine (0.43 kg ha-1) provided acceptable control as rates were reduced further. Corn gluten meal (733 + 733 kg product ha-1) provided good control (12 to 13% crabgrass cover) in 1996 and 1997, but poor control occurred in 1998 when 977 + 586 kg product ha-1 were applied. Single applications of corn gluten meal (1465 kg product ha-1) provided poor control (>32% crabgrass cover) in all three years. Fenoxaprop ([+]-2-[4-(6-chloro-2-benzoxazolyl)oxy], phenoxy] propanoic acid) (0.20 kg ha-1) and quinclorac (3-7-dichloro-8-quinoline-carboxylic acid) (0.75 kg ha-1) provided effective (≤6% crabgrass cover) postemergence crabgrass control in a single application in two out of three years. Effective rates and formulations of the herbicides evaluated only may be appropriate for transition zone areas within the Mid-Atlantic region of the USA."
