Abstract/Contents:"Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) tolerance to and annual bluegrass (Poa annua L.) control with preemergence herbicides applied in advance of or after overseeding perennial ryegrass into bermudagrass (Cynodon spp.) fairways has not been well documented. Experiments were conducted to determine tolerance of perennial ryegrass overseeded into a common bermudagrass fairway to preemergence herbicides and paclobutrazol {(+)-(R*R*)β-[(4-chlorophenyl)methyl]-α -(1,1-dimethylethyl)-1H-1,2,4-triazole-1-ethanol} applied in advance of or after fall overseeding, and their efficacy for annual bluegrass control. Selected preemergence herbicides were applied either at 8, 6, or 4 wks before overseeding and at 2, 4 or 6 wks after overseeding perennial ryegrass. Paclobutrazol was applied at 4, 8 and 12 wks after overseeding. Oxadiazon {3-[2,4-dichloro-5-(1-methylethoxy)phenyl]-5-(1,1- dimethylethyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-(3H)-one} at 2.2 kg ha-1 applied 8 wks before overseeding and paclobutrazol at 0.6 followed by 0.3 followed by 0.3 kg ha-1 applied at 4, 8 and 12 wks after overseeding, respectively, controlled annual bluegrass >90% but decreased perennial ryegrass establishment for up to 4 months after overseeding. Ethofumesate [(+)-2-ethoxy-2,3-dihydro-3,3-dimethyl-5-benzofuranyl methanesulfonate} at 0.8 kg ha-1 applied at 2 and 6 wks after overseeding was the only chemical that did not affect perennial ryegrass establishment and provided > 90% annual bluegrass control in both years of this study. Herbicide programs utilizing prodiamine [2,4 dinitro-N3,N3- dipropyl-6-(trifluoromethyl)-1,3-benzenediamine] at 0.6 kg ha-1 followed by prodiamine at 0.3 kg ha-1, prodiamine at 0.3 kg ha-1 followed by oxadiazon at 1.1 kg ha-1, and oxadiazon 1.1 kg ha-1 followed by prodiamine at 0.3 kg ha-1, applied 6 wks before overseeding followed by an application 6 wks after overseeding, provided <90% annual bluegrass at 6 months after overseeding and decreased perennial ryegrass establishment for up to 4 months after overseeding in 1 of 2 yrs of this study."
