Abstract/Contents:"When dormant bermudagrass is not overseeded, non-selective postemergence herbicides are often used to control winter annual weeds. The objective of this study was to determine the efficacy of different herbicides and tank mixes in controlling established annual bluegrass (Poa annua L.) in dormant common bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.)]. Studies were conducted in 1998, 1999, and 2000 on a golf course driving range in Pendleton, SC [Norfolk loamy sand (fine-loamy, siliceous, thermic, Typic Kandiudults) on separate areas of dormant common bermudagrass which were naturally infested with annual bluegrass. Treatments included atrazine 4L (1.12 kg ha-1), clethodim 0.94EC (0.28 kg ha-1), clethodim 0.94EC + diquat (0.28 +0.42 kg ha-1), clethodim 0.94EC + diquat (0.28 + 0.21 kg ha-1), clethodim 0.94EC + diquat (0.28 + 0.11 kg ha-1), diquat (0.42 kg ha-1), glufosinate 1SC (1.68 kg ha-1), glufosinate 1SC + clethodim 0.94EC (1.68 + 0.28 kg ha-1), glufosinate 1SC + glyphosate (1.68 + 0.56 kg ha-1), glyphosate (0.56 kg ha-1), glyphosate + clethodim 0.94EC (0.56 + 0.28 kg ha-1), glyphosate + diquat (0.56 + 0.14 kg ha-1), imazaquin 1.5LC (0.56 kg ha-1), metsulfuron methyl 60DF (0.05 kg ha-1), pronamide 50WP (1.68 kg ha-1), and an untreated control. Data collected included weekly visual ratings for annual bluegrass control and bermudagrass greenup. Clethodim + diquat treatments provided rapid (1-2 WAT) and long-term control of annual bluegrass in all three years. Tank mixing clethodim and diquat appears to be advantageous compared to clethodim or diquat applied alone. Although diquat alone did provide early suppression, annual bluegrass gradually recovered. Long-term control was also achieved with glufosinate and glufosinate tank mixes over all three years. Clethodim or glyphosate applied alone treatments did not provide control consistently over all three years. With the exception of metsulfuron methyl in 1998, none of the treatments appeared to delay bermudagrass greenup in spring."
