| Abstract/Contents: | Discusses the benefits and installation procedures of drip irrigation systems designed to help the establishment of new plantings. States that drip irrigation is more effective than lawn sprinklers for watering newly-planted trees and shrubs because it applies "water directly to the root zone," doesn't waste water on surrounding areas, applies water at a rate that is "efficiently absorbed by the root ball," and keeps foliage dry, reducing the risk of disease development. Lists the components, design recommendations, and maintenance needs of a drip irrigation system. States that "installing drip is a fairly simple process, and the materials are inexpensive as well. Considering the cost of new plants and the difficulty of hand-watering, investing in a drip system to get a new landscape established is a sensible and cost-effective choice." |
