Abstract/Contents:The art of copying is one of the best skills a superintendent can have. There are large amounts of knowledge that can be gained solely from watching others in the field. The next couple of ideas are ones taken from others in the business: Mark Michaud, of Pebble Beach Golf Links wanted to find away to water by "pulling a hose" without taking up space in his utility vehicles. To solve this problem he made a hose rack from two tire rims and a support bracket bolted to the utility vehicle. The metal support is then welded to the front and back of the rims so the hose will lay securely in the groove. Tim Hiers, of Colliers Reserve, uses cordgrass planted around the maintenance facility. This has advantages to it such as providing a good wildlife habitat, forms a low wind break, eliminates the need for pesticides, fertilizers, irrigation and mowing. In addition it is very environmentally safe to use. Paul Latshaw, Sr., of Congressional Country Club, was aware that he had a problem with the equipment wash area due to the age of his maintenance facility. The first step in his plan to renovate his old area was to come up with a way to capture solids and clippings. He buillt a sump with a recessed lip and stainless steel basket to fit the sump. Once the grate was removed the basket can be pulled up with two handels, the bottom of the basket comes to a "V" and all four sides were of stainless steel mesh. The mesh sides decrease the weight of the basket making it easier to remove when it is full of clippings. Paul B. Latshaw, of Merion Golf Club, designed a tow-behind trailer for his Toro Hydroject. This trailer gets rid of the need for a second person, or for a vehicle. When it reaches it's destination, the trailer is unlatched next to the quick coupler, the hose stretched out and the machine is ready. In addition Paul had built tool storage lockers. In these lockers there is also room for personal protection equipment. By assigning each employee their own tools they take more pride in them and are less likely to damage them. In conclusion it is amazing what can be learned from fellow superintendents.
