Abstract/Contents:Discusses the causes and cures of summer dormancy, which is when "photosynthesis by cool-season grass slows, and fewer carbohydrates are produced." Suggests some ways to reduce stress during summer dormancy: raising the mower, irrigating deeply and infrequently, avoiding nitrogen applications in the spring or summer, planting species that are more heat and drought resistant, promoting deeper root growth throughout the year, cooling the soil/turf, limiting the use of the turf, and finally spreading traffic wear. Suggests that "by understanding basic plant physiology, you can alleviate summer dormancy, usually by irrigating the turfgrass correctly".
