| Abstract/Contents: | "Annual meadow-grass (Poa-annua L.) is thought to have originated in the northern Mediterranean region from a cross between Poa supina Schrad. and Poa infirma H.B.K. Its distribution to many parts of the world has resulted in numerous ecotypes (varieties) and hence it is an exceedingly variable plant. It is often found in turf but because of several disadvantages, i.e., light green colour, susceptibility to disease and drought, continuous flowering habit etc., it is usually considered a weed. From tests designed to eradicate P. annua in three situations, the following results were observed. I. A seed bed that had been treated with Bromacil and sown at specific times following treatment resulted in a P. annua-free bent/fescue sward. II. Germination of P. annua seed that had been introduced into newly laid, weed free sea marsh turf was prevented by R-4461, Dacthal, Balan and Treflan. III. Results were negative from a greenhouse screening programme designed to examine the selectivity of 19 herbicides between mature plants of annual meadow-grass and plants of Yorkshire fog, bentgrass and fescue." |
