Abstract/Contents:Presents an ongoing trial to compare "a new Sceempter variety with the widely used New Zealand strain of crested dogstail." Results include that "by December 1966 no varietal differences were apparent and both were disappointing in that they had formed coarse, open swards with a very poor winter colour." Presents an ongoing trial to compare "a new Sceempter of timothy...with the successful King timothy in pure stands and in mixed swards." Results include that "the varieties seem to be of equal merit so far." Presents an ongoing trial to "confirm the results of previous trials" regarding varieties of perennial ryegrass. Results include that "by the end of 1966 Melle pasture and S.23 were slightly superior to the other varieties in colour and in sward density." Presents an ongoing trial to compare "two varieties of meadow fescue." Results include that "both varieties, but especially the Vertas pasture strain, have formed patchy, open swards of very poor colour and with a high incidence of Poa annua. Presents an ongoing trial to assess the performance of smooth stalked meadow-grass under different conditions. Results include that "by the end of 1966 the grass receiving the higher level of fertilizer was marginally the superior in sward density but both swards had assumed a yellowish-brown colouration and had developed a high population of several weed species." Presents an ongoing trial of a "German footbal field mixture." Results include that "the sward has been mown at 1 in. and has formed a good, close turf of an even light green colour." Presents a trial to compare pure fescues and bents, as well as mixtures of the two. Results include that "pure sowings of the hard fescue varieties have an untidy appearance...These grasses...suffer heavy competition in pure stands from Poa annua and Sagina procumbens. However, in mixed strands with Oregon browntop bent these undesirable features are not apparent...In pure sowings, the creeping red fescue varieties Polar, FR10, FR.11, Sceempter, and S.59 are poor in colour and have not competed with the volunteer species, Poa annua and Agrostis tenuis. Oversown with Oregon browntop, however, these fecues have produced fine weed-free swards with excellent winter colour...The outstanding bent in this trial is without question Oregon browntop...Both pure and mixed swards containing this grass were remarkably weed-free three years after their establishment."
