Abstract/Contents:Profiles the behavior of the mole cricket with the intent of controlling their population and the damage that they cause to golf courses. Summarizes the USGA funded research that was conducted at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, N.C. and golf courses in the southeastern coast of North Carolina which used acousting sound traps in order to monitor the mating flights of the crickets. States that "in addition, a network of automated soil and air temperature recording units were installed throughout the two-county area to monitor degree-day accumulation" once the "crickets were collected, returned to the laboratory, and recorded for species, size, and stage of growth." Explores the correlation "between the presence of adults in the spring in a specific area and subsequent outbreaks of nymphs and turf damage later in the summer." Also examines the "preliminary indications concerning the relationship of certain soil conditions and mole cricket abundance." Examines the impact of irrigation on mole cricket populations and their reaction to pesticides. Explores their burrowing techinques and its impact on possible control of the species. Emphasizes the importance of researching pest biology and ecology which "helps us better understand the reasoning behind some of our strategies for mole cricket management."
