Abstract/Contents:Discusses the additional benefits of growth regulators besides allowing for a reduction in mowing requirements. Summarizes the current plant growth regulating compounds which are summarized into two groups. Type I compounds "are foliarly absorbed and inhibit cell division in the plant meristem" and Type II compounds are crown and root absorbed and suppress" growth through the inhibition of giberallic acid (GA), a naturally occuring plant hormone that reduces cell elongation." Describes the use of plant growth regulating compounds (PGRs) in the control of Poa annua by "slow[ing] its growth more than that of the bentgrass" this allows the bentgrass to develop an advantage over the Poa annua. Illustrates the ability of PGRs to be used in enhancing the color of turf. Comments on how PGRs have been used in overseeding, reducing water use, reduce freezing damage and in helping to combat fungicides. Suggests that "these are only a few of the potential uses for PGRs in the turf industry, and other innovative ideas are likely to follow."
