Abstract/Contents:Describes a study undertaken "to evaluate shape and roundness of sand particles quantitively so that they can be compared with other factors in terms of their contributions to the surface stability." Details how glass beads, crushed glass, mason sand, concrete sand, silica sand, crushed brick, and crushed stone were analyzed to determine the roughness index, angle at repose, coefficient of uniformity, and coefficient of friction along with a two-dimensional image analysis of each sample. Results indicate "that shape and roundness of sand grains could be expressed by Ir [roughness index, which is sensitive and convenient for picking out the differences between materials."
