Abstract/Contents:"The herbicide glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine] was evaluated over a 2-yr period for effectiveness in quackgrass (Agropyron repens L. Beauv.) control when applied at 0.8, 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 kg ha-1 alone and either left undisturbed or rotovated 3 or 5 DAT (days after treatment) on three subplot treatments. Depth of rotovation was 12 cm. Comparisons were made among suitable check treatments for the three postapplication management treatments. The results for short-term (seasonal) control (66 to 90 DAT) were similar for both years i.e., there was a trend for increased quackgrass control with rate and some improvement with rotovation at 5 DAT. All glyphosate treatments gave significant long-term control of quackgrass (415 DAT) when compared to respective check plots. Glyphosate plots left undisturbed had significantly less quackgrass than plots that were rotovated 3 days following spraying. There was no significant difference in the amount of quackgrass in the undisturbed plots when compared to those plots rotovated 5 days following the application of glyphosate. These results indicate that a longer period than 5 days following glyphosate application is required before rotovation if quackgrass control is to be improved. Future trials will be conducted using only the low rates of glyphosate with rotovation delayed up to 10 days following treatment."
