Abstract/Contents:Discusses vertical mowing (verticutter) and their uses for heavy thatch, beyond 1/2 inch, because aeration cannot remove heavier thatch. Describes some models available to turf management. Briefly discusses vertical mowers offered by companies such as Jacobsen, Bush Hog, Ransome, and National Mower, and dethatchers for home-lawn use offered by Bluebird, and Textron under the Ryan name. Includes pictures of verticutters: Bluebird's walk-behind, Turfco's LS-20, Bush Hog's RTO-driver TVM-33; and Ryan's Mataway unit. Discusses some tips on timing and operation; late summer or early fall (or early spring) for cool-season grass dethatching; early to mid-summer for warm-season grasses. Gives four suggestions: blade should cut grooves deep enough; apply a pre-emergent after dethaching if weeds fill in; use a vertical mower for heavier turf, and a light dethatching for fescue or bluegrass; and do not replace aeration with dethatching.
