Abstract/Contents:Discusses the importance of taking proper soil samples for chemical analyses. States that "the lab can only test what you give them, so you need to give them a sample that will tell you something meaningful." Suggests soil tubes, spades or shovels, augers, trowels and powered samplers as the right tools for taking an effective sample; and using soil from at least a dozen individual points in the sampling area. Notes that "the soil from all sampling points within the area are combined for one sample." Advises in order to sample correctly, you should: be consistent with samples; use six-inch depth; remove surface debris from samples; collect and mix all the soil samples; record all the information requested; and follow laboratory instructions. Notes that timing is not critical in general, but it might be important with salt damage such as from deicers. Also, suggests testing the soil first when installing new turf. Finally, advises to keep copies of all records about soil testing, results and locations.
