Abstract/Contents:"The relationship between ultrastructure and function in Cynodon salt glands was studied. The glands consist of an outer cap cell and a large inner basal cell. Long invaginations of the basal cell plasmalemma, termed partitioning membranes (PM's),extend from the wall separating the gland cells. The permeability of the gland apoplast was studied using ionic lanthanum. A permeability barrier was found between the gland cells that was composed of lignin and located in the outer basal cell. The apoplast between the PM's and the walls of adjoining mesophyll cells was found to be permeable. Ultrastructural changes associated with the elicitation of secretion were an increase in the volume of the subcuticular collecting chamber, an increase in the surface area of the PM's, and an increase in the volume of cap cell vacuoles. The following conclusions were drawn: (1)the PM's function in the loading of the basal cell; (2)ion movement to the cap cell is down a free energy gradient and symplastic; (3)final secretion is eccrine; and (4) the collect-chamber is functional in the final emission of solutes to the plant exterior."
