| Abstract/Contents: | "Effects of O2 concentrations of 1, 21, and 100% and photosynthetic photo flux densities (PPFD) of 500 and 1800 uE m-2 sec-1 on rates of apparent photosynthesis (APS), photorespiration (PR) true photosynthesis (TPS) and dark respiration (DR) were determined on attached shoots of decaploid (70 chromosomes) and hexaploid (42 chromosomes) tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.). Gas exchange was measured with an infra red CO2 analyzer arranged in a closed circuit system. The decaploid exhibited rates of APS that were about 20-50% than the hexaploid at 1 and 21%, but not in 100% O2. Rates of PR in the decaploid were 16-80% higher than in the hexaploid with 1800 uE m-2 sec-1 at all O2 concentrations, and also with 500 uE m-2 sec-1 in 100% )2. Rates of TPS in the decaploid were also higher than in the hexaploid in all O2 concentrations, particularly at the high PPFD. Rates of DR were 19-32% higher in the hexaploid compared with the decaploid genotype, and they were little affected by O2 concentrations." |
