Abstract/Contents: | Discusses the importance of controlling grain on golf greens. States that "grain can be defined simply as the direction in which the grass is growing, or laying, as the case may be." Explains that unmanaged grain can affect putts by pulling the ball or altering the speed of the putt. Discusses some available methods for controlling grain. States that grass should be prevented from laying in one direction by changing the mowing pattern daily. Suggests that "visualizing a pattern with clock numbers is an easy way for crew members to remember the direction they are supposed to mow." Also, states that a greens-mower attachment (groomer), which "helps the turf stand up and allows the mower to get a much cleaner cut, rather than just pressing the grass flat without trimming the leaf blade to the intended height". Finally, advises to use these methods persistently and properly on weekly basis, and inspect the greens daily after mowing such as groom and topdress. |
