Abstract/Contents:"Efficient methods for extraction of pesticides from soil are necessary for environmental fate studies. This study examined efficiencies of methanol:water solvent systems for recovery of the herbicide acifluorfen [5-[2-chloro-4-(trifluoromethyl)phenoxy]-2-nitrobenzoic acid] from soils of different properties. The applicability of supercritical fluid CO2 extraction (SFE) for recovery of acifluorfen was also examined. High recovery (>95%) was obtained over wide range of methanol (40 to 80%) to water compositions. Adding acid, base, EDTA or cation-exchange resin to a 80:20, methanol:water solution offered no improvement. However, EDTA or exchange resin gave slightly higher recoveries of acifluorfen and/or degradation products with incubated soil. Recovery of acifluorfen by SFE required addition of a modifier. Extraction efficiencies equal to the highest obtained with liquid extractions were possible using 40:60, methanol:1 N HCI as a modifier."
