| Abstract/Contents: | "The evaluation of cultivars under winter wear treatment is particularly difficult with smooth-stalked meadow-grass because of the build-up of thatch before wear and the dormancy of some cultivars during winter. For these reasons, the conventional expression of 'wear tolerance' in terms of ground cover seems inadequate for this species. Data are presented here from cores taken before wear (to assess shoot numbers and above-ground biomass) and shear strength values obtained near the end of the wear season, to show the important cultivar differences were not being made clear by conventional assessment, and to underline the importance of shear strength as a character relevant to the 'wear tolerance' of cultivars." |
