Abstract/Contents:Sclerotium blight is a disease caused by the soil borne fungus Sclerotium rolfsii. Even though the fungus has been known for 40 years, it has not been reported previously as attacking turfgrasses. Warm season grasses were found to be resistant, whereas the cool season grasses are susceptible to the disease. The fungus is most destructive in the summer and early fall when the air temperature is between 75 and 95 degrees. The cultural practice of replacing diseased areas with healthy sod has achieved negative results due to the saprophytic activity below the diseased area. Five fungicides, OAG3890, PCNB, Botran, and Actidione, Vitavax, and Difoltan were applied to two greens consisting of Poa annua and seaside bentgrass. All five fungicides gave effective control of the disease, but Vitavax and Difoltan were slightly more effective than the other three.
