Abstract/Contents: | Presents an evaluation of "a set of measured soil properties in order to determine which soil properties can be used most confidently to indicate soil quality in these [urban] disturbed areas." Results include that "the hierarchical examination of the data allowed us to evaluate inherent variability in sampling intensity needs for this set of soil properties, while assessing their usefulness as indicators of soil quality,...most soil properties measured served to distinguish the more severely disturbed sites (i.e. the parks),...temperature and pH also correspond with relative disturbance rankings within both the parks and the campus sites,...[and] it appears that more fragile, highly disturbed sites are more sensitive to even small changes in primary conditions, while more highly buffered sites can sustain small changes in primary conditions without a corresponding response in corollary properties. This enhanced sensitivity of the more disturbed sites also suggests that a greater variety of properties may be used as indicators of soil quality in more highly disturbed systems. In particular, soil organic carbon and moisture may facilitate development of a more complete picture of these disturbed areas." Concludes that "these results suggest that increased disturbance significantly alters the physical, biological, and chemical nature of urban soils. This is important because urban and urban fringe green spaces are often established without regard for soils, and erosion and loss of plant cover often become severe problems. In many cases, management techniques are applied only ater these signs of deterioration are obvious, when recovery is more difficult. Park and natural area managers need to know, in advance, what site changes to expect with increased human disturbance. This will allow them to select sites with qualities that buffers detrimental change, helps them in estimating the type of maintenance necessary to keep the sites at the desired quality level, and will assist with rehabilitation efforts in intensively used areas. urban soil quality data will facilitate development of management guidelines directed toward neutralizing the effects of human recreational activities." |
