Abstract/Contents:Identifying weeds is the first step in effective herbicide control. Also knowing the life cycle of the weeds will assist in spraying at an effective time. Emerged summer weeds are most effectively controlled in May and June; emerged winter weeds are most effectively controlled in October and November. There are three general categories for weeds--summer annual, winter annual, and perennial. Perennial broadleaf weeds are the most difficult to control. Combination applications of 2,4-D, Benvel, MCPP when the weeds are young will control these types of weeds. Organic arsenical sprayed in May or June will control grass-like weeds. Summer annual weeds germinate in spring and die in the fall. Applications soon after germiantion with organic arsenicals will control grassy weeds; combinations of 2,4-D, Banvel, and MCPP sprayed in May or June will control broadleaf weeds. Winter annual weeds germinate in the fall and die the next summer. Pre-emergent spraying of Kerb will kill most winter annuals. Round-up can be used to elminate annual bluegrass if sprayed in December or January on a dormant grass. A listing of the major herbicides complete with its common chemical name, type of herbicide (pre-emergent, non-selective, etc.) and application comments are also given.
