Abstract/Contents:"Maintaining normal water and nutrient cycles, and preventing erosion of soils is critical in preventing desertification of deliate arid ecosystems. Cryptobiotic soil crust, consisting of cyanobacteria, lichens, mosses, and fungi, comprises up to 70% of the living soil cover in many undisturbed arid regions. The crust enhances nutrient availability to higher plants, protects soils from erosion, and increases infiltration of rainwater. Cryptobiotic crusts are easily disturbed and recovery rates are slow; therefore, enhanced public awareness and strict conservation measures are needed to allow the crusts to establish and protect arid regions from degradation."
