Abstract/Contents:"Growth responses to sulfur applications have been demonstrated for only a limited number of turfgrass species, primarily cool-season grasses. Under conditions where sulfate is prone to leach - such as sites with sandy soils - the addition of elemental sulfur may provide a slow-release mechanism where S leaching is slowed thus affecting turf growth. This study determined the response of Tifway bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon x C. transvaalensis) to varying N:S:K ratios on a sandy soil profile in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States. Tifway bermudagrass grown on a sandy soil profile was evaluated for turf quality, growth response and nutrient uptake efficiency under varying nitrogen, sulfur, and potassium treatment combinations. There appeared to be a trend in both turf quality and growth responses which indicated turf fertilizer with higher N and S rates performed better. Tissue nutrient levels were clearly affected by total quantities of nutrients applied. No N:S:K ratio was seen to affect tissue nutrient levels. However, even at the lowest fertility regimes, no deficiencies in tissue nutrient content were found."
