Abstract/Contents:"The utilization of native grasses continues to grow across North Amercia for conservation, reclamation, CRP programs, right-of-ways, wildlife habitat and rangeland reseeding. Seed cost and limited availability have hindered the use of many native grass species such as blue grama (Bouteloua gracilis), a dominant warm-season native grass occupying much of the Great Plains. The objective of this study was to determine the agronomic practices for successful seed production of blue grama. We observe that (1) 100 seeds meter-1 increased seedling vigor compared to 200 seeds, (2) 66 kg P ha-1 decreased emergence over 0 and 33 kg P ha-1, but increased height and vigor, (3) a VAM seed treatment (vesicular arbuscular mycorrhizae of 7.86 x 105 cfu Penicillium bilaii g-1 of blue grama seed) increased emergence but had no effect on seedling vigor, (4) a 22 kg ha-1 foliar application of N at establishment increased height. These results suggest blue grama seed production can be improved by appropriate fertilizer applications that increase initial emergence and seedling vigor."
