Abstract/Contents:Grass roots can be entirely eaten away by white grubs, the larvae of the scarab beetles. Several Cyclocephala spp. have been found to infest California turfgrass, but only one, Cyclocephala hirta has been identified as a major cause of Kentucky bluegrass plantings. Four chemicals-diazinon, Dursban, Turean, and Dylox-are registered for use in California for white grub control, but their effectiveness has been inconsistent. The insecticides Oftanol 5G, Isofenphos 5G, Dioxathion 30EC, Diazinon 14G, Trichlorfon 80SP, and RE-27644 10G were repeatedly tested on golf courses near Temecula and Victorville, CA. Granular applications were made followed by watering. In some trials, results were unsatisfactory because of variations between treatments to dates and geographical area. Data indicates that the organophosphate Oftanol provided near consistent control of the grub due to its longer residual properties.
